Digital vs. Physical media, or the best of both.

We recently started a conversation about how we buy, store and keep our media, so I thought I would share what I do and more importantly why. Of course any system is a compromise to a degree, but I think this is the best of both worlds…

Logically I will stick to digital and leave the vinyl alone. If you wish to store vinyl cheaply and haven’t heard of the Ikea Expedit then you really need to have a look.

Anyhoo, on to the digital:

99% of my music is still purchased on CD and transferred to the Mac in Apple Lossless. Once transferred I then throw away the jewel covers and archive the discs and liners in a neat little aluminium storage box with handles. Of course I could buy these albums direct from iTunes but here is why I do what I do:

• CD quality is noticeably better
• The cost is the same or less sometimes
• I am supporting our local music store (Blackwood Sound)
• I have the originals in case my Mac has a meltdown
• I still like to look through the liner notes sometimes
• The CD cases take up very little space (actually, it takes up one shelf on the Expidit rack so I cant buy more vinyl)

That’s about it. I am interested to hear if anyone else has a similar or better system! So feel free to add a comment below and lets get the discussion started.

Is the size of my room an important issue to consider when purchasing a speaker?

Yes, absolutely. From our smallest bookshelf the Atomix to our largest floorstanding speaker the Neuphonix it is important to consider the size, shape and build of the room when selecting a loudspeaker.

Smaller speakers can often get 'lost' in large rooms, unless they are combined with a subwoofer or are listened at moderate levels. Conversely, larger floorstanders can become 'overpowering' in smaller rooms, although this is more manageable through listening at lower volume levels.

The size of your room will also play a part on your choice of amplifier, which will of course need to be well matched to your choice of speakers. If you are trying to fill the Town Hall, you will need large speakers and a powerful amplifier that can deliver a clean signal at high output levels, not 'toy' hi-fi. Remember, your system will only be as good as it's weakest link!

Krix Continue Relationship With SAFC And Australian Film

It is an exciting time for Film and TV Production in Adelaide with the completion of the new SAFC (South AustralianFilm Corporation) Adelaide Studios located in Glenside, a facility that will be boasting Krix product throughout.

Roughly 20 years ago Krix were tasked with designing and supplying the audio solutions for SAFC’s previous studios in Hendon, so we are proud to continue this relationship forward and be apart of this incredibly exciting new facility in Glenside.

Krix were brought into the new Adelaide Studios development at an early stage in the project and were involved with...

Consulting & Concept: Discussing space, logistics and what equipment would be required.
Design Phase: Krix had to ensure the integrity of the audio chain so that amplification, loudspeakers and set up would be up to Dolby Certification standards. This process is the same as the one undertaken by Krix when designing a commercial cinema setup.
Installation: Krix were tasked with installing all the speaker elements of the system.
Testing: To ensure the system was performing at the required standard, the product was put through a stringent quality and performance testing phase.

A Great USB Music Streamer and Great Customer Service To Boot – HRT Deliver

I don’t want to blow our own trumpet here, but I feel like Krix offers some pretty spectacular customer service. We have fixed subwoofers that are 7 years old under warranty just because we knew (and admitted to) a capacitor fault that became apparent well after release. How many companies would do that? That’s just one example of what I believe is superior customer service and its my experience that this often come from being local and connected to the community you service (as well as a solid sense of integrity).

On the other hand, when I email a company overseas I am never shocked when I don’t receive a reply, or the reply is short or even sometimes terse. If the questions get too hard the correspondence seems to end abruptly without any explanation. This is probably one of the greatest disadvantages of buying OS over the ‘net. Anyway, despite the tone of the post so far I am not here to complain, rather I would like to bring your attention to a company with extraordinary service and what I think is an equally extraordinary product – especially for the price.

You see, some time ago I read a great article about a HRT Music Streamer USB DAC. I needed something portable and efficient and I only required a USB input from my laptop so I decided to take the plunge and buy one. Given the attractive introductory price I couldn’t lose. I checked on the ‘net and discovered Wicked Digital was the local agent and I promptly purchased it (with free delivery – thanks WD).

I used the DAC almost daily (running my Ecliptix and Equinox, but most recently my modest set of desktop speakers…photo attached) and loved the performance – it was one of the best audio bargains in my arsenal. Sadly, some time out of warranty I had a chip burn out on the circuit board. Its all surface mount so I wasn’t prepared to tackle it and R&D are overrun with work so I didn’t bother them. I thought about emailing someone about it but decided it wasn’t worth the trouble based on my pervious experiences. One morning I decided that it couldn’t hurt to try before it ended up in the bin, so I emailed HRT in the US about repairing the item. It was about 8:30 am CST. To my amazement, within twenty minutes I received a reply from Kevin Halverson, CTO from High Resolution Technologies in the US, asking me about which model I had and explaining that repairing the original model was not economical. That could have been where his responsibility ended of course, and to honest I was so impressed with the quick response that I would have been happy with that, but no, Mr Halverson also offered for me to return my failed DAC – out of warranty – and he would upgrade it to the Music Streamer II for a mere $75 + return freight. Bearing in mind this was not to gain a sale I find this exceptional service and unheard of with a product in this price range (or well above for that matter).

If you are in the market for a high quality DAC there is something for most budgets at HRT, and I can highly recommend the product itself, but the customer service is something else again! Buy with confidence.

7 Things You Should Consider When Designing a Concealed Home Theatre

Design - To be heard, not seen.

Following up on our last blog we are going to delve deeper into the Design category. So if you are after a high quality audio solution in your home, but would like a more discreet aesthetic, this is for you.

1. Application: First of all you want to think about the main use for the system.

a. Home Cinema or Home Theatre

b. Music

c. Multi-Room Audio

d. Outdoor

e. Or a mix of the above.

2. Setup: Depending on what you are after you want to think about the speaker setup.

a. For Home Cinema you will be thinking about either a 7.1, 5.1 or 2.1 setup.

b. For Music you will favor a 2.1 setup or 2 channel

3. Space: You want to think about the size of the rooms and how they are used. Whether you want your speakers In-Wall, On-wall or In-Ceiling. In terms of Outdoor you will be thinking of areas to mount the speaker, or once again use In-Ceiling. The size and build of the room will heavily impact your decision making when it comes to the audio solution. For example, a brick or solid wall cannot be built into. In this case you can either consider mounting a slim-line sleek designed speaker like the Tryptix or potentially installing some Hemispherix to be used as the Fronts and Centre.

4. Electronics and Cabling: The correct choice of electronics is imperative and the features in the heart of a home theatre system are varied. Do you wish to stream music to the system? How many zones do you require, and do those zones need video or just audio? Do you require them to be independent (so the kids can watch a Blu ray inside while the adults are outside listening to a CD or streamed music from the PC). How many sources will be connected and do you have enough HDMI inputs? Do you need to dock an iPod to the amp? Of course if you are using a flatscreen and a projector you will also need two HDMI outputs.

Cable considerations include using the right cable – generally a dedicated custom cable that won’t absorb moisture and features low-loss and less interference that “normal” cable. You will also need to consider where the cable will be routed to keep it away from AC power cable and how you will have access. A good installer can get a cable down almost any brick veneer wall but if you have solid walls you may need to chase the cables down at least one part of the wall. Using an in-ceiling system is easiest as you only have to get the speaker cables in one wall and in to the ceiling.

5. Automation: Do you want to have the system incorporated in an automated system that controls lighting and curtains? Many home theatres benefit from simple automation so when the system is activated a projector screen glides from the ceiling, the lights dim and the curtains close.

6. Installation, connection and calibration: This is where a good installer comes in to the equation. Not only are they experienced in overcoming issues but they are also knowledgeable when it comes to the setup and tuning of the system. Theatre receivers have become quite complex and having someone who is familiar with the product will ensure you get the best from it.

7. Operation: a quality learner remote control will not only make the system easier to operate but will save your marriage. Get one.

This is just a brief summary for designing a concealed home cinema. If you go through these steps you should have a good grasp on what you are after and how to move forward.

Over the past few years the Home Cinema and Speaker industry has seen large changes to both product and consumer. The search for the ‘Cinematic Experience’ is now a reality in ones very own home. This is not to say that it wasn’t available before, but nowadays it is a fair statement that inside every household sits at least one ‘Home Theatre’ system, in varying applications and sizes. From a Krix perspective this demand towards ‘Home Theatre’ is fantastic. People in general now want to truly experience great sound, but is this all they’re after? No is the simple answer.

Everyone is different, and Sound and Speaker Design is like art, completely subjective. Each person has varying levels of technical knowledge, aesthetic wants, performance needs, and price ranges. Using this criteria as a base we have identified the following groups...

Design, Cinema and Purist.

In this blog we highlight three basic groups that make up these different wants and needs and then in the next three weeks will expand on each group and work through a bit of a ‘How to?’ for each section.

Which group do you fit in?

Design - To be heard, not seen.

The first group, which in our opinion is the newest, is the person who wants a quality speaker but Design and Aesthetic is their main motivator.

You want ‘design’ and a ‘built in or concealed’ solution. Multi-Room Audio, Home Cinema, Concealed Speakers, Outdoor Speakers, whether you are building a new house or looking to add to another, these are the questions on the tip of the tongue. However, just because you are looking for built in or design does not mean you have to sacrifice quality, because as soon as you do this the cinematic experience and performance will be gone.

Next week we will do an entire blog about this section, and walk through the steps you as the user should be taking. What questions should you be asking? What research should you be doing? Is it Indoor Speakers or Outdoor Speakers? Or both?

Cinema - The new ‘Pool room’

Once upon a time the only way to truly experience cinema sound was to hop in a car, drive to the closest theatre that was playing your desired film, park the car, line up and pay for a ticket, line up and pay for a coke and popcorn and then finally sit down and watch the film and gain that experience. Well right now for a lot of people it is as easy as slotting a DVD or Blu-Ray into your player and kicking back on your very own couch.

You want a Surround Sound Experience, Home Theatre, with quality and performance that will literally shake the ground, if asked. Blu-Ray, DVD, and Music, the ultimate ‘bragging room’. Also, the perfect room to sit down for a quiet night in, have a nice meal, pour a glass of wine and settle in to your favorite film, whilst still experiencing cinema sound.

The ‘Impress with Krix’ Competition that was held during the year showed very clearly that there is a lot of you out there, and rocking systems that are packing a serious punch in terms of sound. Just have a look at the gallery to see for yourself.

We want to talk more about Cinema and Sound. We also realise that for people fairly new to this sort of stuff it can be quite overwhelming. You might be asking questions like, when building a home cinema what setup should I go for a 5.1 or 7.1? What amp should I pair my speakers with? I want to use my system for music too, what is the best way to incorporate or wire this?

Purist - Renaissance of Vinyl and the Collector

You know who you are.

Quality and Performance are paramount. You picked Vinyl over CD, CD over MP3 and have an unrelenting focus on the highest of quality music reproduction. When listening to music you favour the 2.1 Stereo Setup compared to that of the 5.1.

Now rather than a straight up ‘How to?’ this will no doubt become more of a discussion, however from this section the most knowledge can be passed to others. We will use this as a platform to lend handy tips to those out there who are looking to improve their knowledge and in doing so will no doubt improve their sound systems.

‘Impress with Krix’ also showed us the knowledge and enthusiasm you all have on the subject, we love it and want to hear more. There are people out there myself included who are now reverting back to quality and collection. People are buying Vinyl again, and if importing music making sure they do it as a Lossless file to ensure quality (a subject that we will blog in the future). But they need help, a guide. So lets get the discussion going. We will do a full blog on this section in the weeks to come and hope to keep it going as a Bi-Monthly thread.

Epix Installation and Technical Drawings

Below are some images and details of the first Epix installation that took place here in Adelaide. Being local - this installation provided Krix engineers with the ability to 'test' out the complete workings of the design from evaluating the stud framework to plasterboard fixings and of course final fitout of the componentry.

The Krix Epix being a completely self-contained enclosure meant that even though the main wall backed onto another living room, unwanted sound transference was virtually zero. Notice the cable management which comes in through the top of the cabinet and connects to the input terminals located behind a small 'secret' panel on the front panel. Plasterboard edging is also supplied as part of the loudspeaker to ensure ease and accuracy of finishing.

In this instance the client was looking to completely hide the speakers - so a micro-perf screen was selected to mount on the front wall, although this is still to be installed. For more detailed information on how these speakers are installed, below are the technical drawings of the Epix and how they can be used. Firstly, let me say what an enjoyable month it has been reviewing all of the entries as they came in. Everyone at Krix has been genuinely excited to see the chatter that has been going on between the entrants, with the view to finding out more about the various setups. With a total of 36 entries, I was pleasantly surprised to see that almost 50% of the systems used our flagship Neuphonix speakers. The main thread that I took from the competition is the efforts you have all gone to with your systems. Whether it was a small two channel setup or a fully blown home theatre, you have all exhibited the essence of what Krix is about – and that is the passion for the best quality sound experience in both music/movie reproduction.

So, to the difficult task of picking the winner. But before we do, Krix has decided to expand on the second and third prizes due to the high standard of the entries.
